Abstract

Following the publication of the above article, the authors have recognized that errors were made in pages 487-490 of the Results and discussion section. Citations of and were omitted. On page 487-488, 4th paragraph, sentences 4-6 should read: “The four oxygen regimes affected the pools of in the overlying water during the incubation period differently (Fig. 1). Both oscillating and anoxic conditions resulted in removal during the first period of the incubation, but under constantly oxic conditions we observed relatively higher concentrations than in the other treatments suggesting the presence of ammonia oxidation. The initial consumption of implies either co-respiration of oxygen and or nitrification and denitrification occurring simultaneously.” On page 489, 1st paragraph, the second sentence should read: “Recent work based on comparisons of more than 650 denitrifier genomes has shown that approximately 80% of the genomes with nirS also possess a nosZ gene, and that nosZI-harbouring organisms are more likely also capable of dissimilatory reduction rather than only reducing N2O (Graf et al., 2014).” On page 490, 1st paragraph, sentences 3-4 should read: “Paracoccus denitrificans has previously been described to perform heterotrophic nitrification coupled to aerobic denitrification, which would enable the production of the needed for denitrification under -limiting conditions (Robertson and Kuenen, 1990; Arts et al., 1995). The predominance of nosZII sequences related to Bacteroidetes in the samples from the oscillating treatment starting with anoxic conditions is especially interesting as they often lack the genes for reduction in the denitrification pathway (Graf et al., 2014).” The authors apologize for the confusion caused by these errors.
