Abstract
In 2006, Front Pembela Islam, the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and other conservative Muslims campaigned ardently for the introduction of a national Pornography Law in Indonesia and were active in the lead-up to the passing of the Law. FPI is one of the most notorious hardline Islamist groups in Indonesia. It was established in August 1998 by Rizieq Shihab, with backing from some politicians, senior military and police figures. The introduction of the 2008 Law on Pornography can be seen an example of the increasing influence of Indonesian conservative Muslim groups. Pornography cases during these periods were predominantly focused on the print media. One of the main differences in the treatment of pornography in films and print media at this time is that films were generally censored prior to distribution, whereas print media seen to violate the law was usually sanctioned after publication.
