Abstract
Over two decades after her death, Bessie Head's four novels, two histories, and one short story collection continue to be excavated for further levels of meaning by scholars both in her native South Africa and internationally. As an African woman writer and a feminist, Head has caught the imagination of readers both in and out of the academy, prompting discussions of her feminist inclinations and her deep concern with questions of gender and race in South Africa.
