Abstract

Abstract The self-association of selected O-deuteriated and normal (O-protonated) alcohols dissolved in CCl 4 was compared. The free OD band of the deuteriated alcohols decreases more strongly on increasing the OD alcohol concentration compared with the change of the free OH band at analogous conditions. The association enthalpy -ΔH OH of OH alcohols was found to be 10 to 15% higher than -ΔH OD . Some effects, which became evident on mixing the isotopomers, are discussed in terms of cooperativity of hydrogen bonding.
