Abstract

Abstract H. B. Dobbie, author of “New Zealand Ferns”, arrived in New Zealand from England in 1875. Trained as a fitter, and already interested in ferns, he was eventually stationed at Whangarei as District Manager for the Railways Department but established a large citrus orchard as a sideline. In 1880 he published a rather primitive book of illustrations of New Zealand ferns. He left the Railways in 1900 and after a short sojourn on railways work in southern Africa returned to settle in Auckland where he worked as a proof reader. He established a large fernery at his home and in 1921 published his well-known “New Zealand Ferns” which has been reissued in several editions. In 1910 he donated a large area of native bush, Dobbie Park, to Whangarei. He died in 1940.
