Abstract

Profile variations on a time scale of hours have been detected in the H..cap alpha.. emission line of Nova Cygni 1975 during the early decline from maximum light. These variations are attributed to a combination of light-travel-time effects and a periodic variation in a central source of ionizing radiation. With this interpretation these variations can be used to estimate the time of the nova eruption, 1975 August 24.8 UT, independently of the premaximum light curve. The size of the expanding envelope is derived, and a lower limit to the ejected mass is estimated. (AIP)
