Abstract

The Hungarian Marxist philosopher György Lukács (1885–1971) is a complex human figure with a massive oeuvre produced throughout more than 50 years. His ideas are usually associated with the masterpiece History and Class Consciousness, published in 1923, with his political comments and his work as a critique of arts and theorist of aesthetics. To understand the development of his thought it is necessary to take into account, however, the so-called ontological work, associated with the project of building up a Marxist ethics. The preparation of his social ontology can be traced back to the 1930s and culminates in his lengthy but incomplete Ontology of Social Being, released posthumously in the 1980s and not yet fully translated into English.
