Abstract

Breast enlargement developed in five patients being treated with spica casts. Examination of the tissue excised in each case revealed gynecomastia. Previous reports of a relationship between long-term immobilization and the development of gynecomastia could not be found. Although evaluation of these patients revealed hormonal abnormalities, the pathophysiology of the growths remains an enigma.
