Abstract

Experience has shown that most diagnostic errors in pediatric and adolescent gynecology are errors of omission, resulting from incomplete or absent examination. Yet, with the proper approach, a complete gynecologic examination can be easily and successfully performed in the young patient. The child’s apprehension can often be alleviated by having her “help” with the examination, and the presence of the mother or an aide is reassuring. Examination of the adolescent begins in the consultation room, and requires that the girl be respected as an individual in her own right.
