Gut microorganisms can modulate response to cancer therapies. In this issue of Cancer Cell, Teng etal. trace the gut bacteria and metabolites in rectal cancer patients over the course of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and identify Bacteroides vulgatus as a driver bacterium of therapeutic resistance by supplying tumors with nucleotides.
