Abstract

Results of recent investigations on the immunological regulation of gastrointestinal function infer that future considerations of factors that coordinate the physiological behavior of epithelium and smooth muscle must include the role of the mucosal immune system. Implications of such regulation extend to mucosal tissues beyond the alimentary canal.
