Stress is linked to negative outcomes in cardiovascular diseases but exactly why is unclear. In this issue of Immunity, Xu etal. report that stress elicits glucocorticoid-induced gut permeability, in turn triggering the expansion of a population of neutrophils that can stimulate vaso-occlusive episodes.
