Abstract

Recent reports have linked accelerated brain aging (i.e., neuroimaging-predicted brain age is higher than chronological age) to depression, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, obesity, and reduced life expectancy. However, pathophysiological mechanisms underpinning accelerated brain aging remain unknown. Here, we evaluated whether gut microbiome dysbiosis is associated with accelerated brain aging in individuals with depression across the lifespan.
