Abstract
This essay addresses the central issue in scholarly debate surrounding the authenticity of the original manuscript of the Sikh scripture, the Adi Granth, prepared in 1604 c.E., and now carefully preserved by the descendants of Dhir Mal at Kartarpur in Jalandhar District of Punjab (hence its name Kartarpur biγ or recension). According to tradition, a Sikh named Banno prepared a copy of the Adi Granth (hence its name Banno biγ) which contains some extra-canonical material. The textual problem of Guru Arjan's ramakali hymn has been the main focus of scholarly discussion in the Kartarpur-Banno debate.
