Abstract

Recent marauding terrorist firearm attacks have acted as an environmental jolt, mobilizing policymakers worldwide to consider changes in policing strategies that are likely to shape public safety, governance, society, businesses, communities, and other organizations, impacting the lives of individuals in society. This article uses a mixed-methods study to highlight the key philosophical, ethical and fiscal questions embedded within this policy debate, in particular, whether to arm all London Metropolitan Police Service officers with guns. Through this exploration, the paper takes up the 2018 Academy of Management theme to contribute to a safer, more inclusive society by joining the dialogue in organization studies about decision-making during times of uncertainty and makes theoretical extensions by linking environmental jolt and bounded rationality theory with current political debates about an ‘Americanisation’ of UK policies.
