Abstract

Robert Markley is professor of English at the University of Illinois. He is author of Two-Edg'd Weapons: Style and Ideology in the Comedies of Etherege, Wycherley, and Congreve (1988), Fallen Languages: Crises of Representation in Newtonian England, 1660-1740(1993), and Dying Planet: Mars and the Anxieties of Ecology from the Canals to Terraformation (forthcoming). He is completing a book on European literature in the Asian-dominated world of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
