Abstract

Considering the issue of Soviet revisionism and the concept of collective cultural amnesia, Gulag history is an exceedingly difficult topic of research, given that to this day it remains a very sensitive issue in the former Soviet Union. With the massive amount of literature dedicated to Socialist Realism, very little attention has been paid to the works and artifacts which have survived the destruction in the Gulag camps and which have been collected, documented, and preserved by a number of initiatives. Fragments and "pieces of the puzzle" obtained from a wide variety of resources were used in this article to construct a rough sketch of the subject, introduce the reader to the topic from a historical point of view, and discuss the practical issues of research and information collection methods.
