Abstract
There is much debate over whether guilt arises from fear of social taboos, internalized cultural values, or betrayal of authentic standards. Theologians and psychologists also have differing theories on the nature, development, and treatment of shame. Since one's definition of guilt and shame feelings effect one's perspective and treatment of them, definitions of these terms will be given followed by the description of experiencing guilt and shame, theories of development and therapeutic approaches. The focus will be limited to the Western World cultures.
