Abstract

The long term motion of guiding centres in three low frequency electrostatic waves forming a perfectly confining square in phase space is considered. The square is divided into three domains with time varying areas. We show that only knowledge of the canonical action of the guiding centre at an initial time and the temporal evolution of the areas of the various domains in the square are needed to explain the structure of the stroboscopic trajectories.
