Abstract

Abdominal pain is common and impairs quality of life. Many specialist societies across the world have formulated guidelines on the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome and all of them mention antispasmodics for the treatment of abdominal pain. However, the precise substances used depend on the treatment options available. It is noteworthy that many guidelines explicitly recommend hyoscine butylbromide and peppermint oil, whereas the use of analgesics is not an option.
