Abstract

ABSTRACT In his Foreword to this special issue of SEEIR, the author reflects on the larger significance of the 125th anniversary of the founding in 1899 of the historic Russian department, later Slavonic Division/Slavic and Baltic Division, NYPL. While recognizing the importance of peer European institutions celebrating their centenaries, Kasinec emphasizes the strategic location of the NYPL’s research collection at the very heart of a global metropolis. In reviewing the weighty contributions of his long-time colleagues, Robert H. Davis, Jr., Hee-Gwone Yoo, David Lowe, Bogdan Horbal, and Robert Sink to this special issue, Kasinec gratefully acknowledges his great personal and professional debt owed to the collections, services, and staff of New York’s “people’s palaces.”
