Abstract

AbstractThe effect of the different modes of guar administration on postprandial plasma glucose and insulin responses after a starch meal was studied in 8 patients with NIDD. They ingested: (a) 30g mashed potato; (b) 5g guar followed by mashed potato; (c) 5g guar mixed with potato. On occasion (c), plasma glucose was significantly decreased, both total and incremental integrated responses (TIR, IIR) being significantly lower. Plasma insulin after (c) was not significantly changed. On occasion (b), neither glucose or insulin values were significantly different from controls. Currently, manufacturers recommend having guar as a pre‐meal drink. In contrast, this study suggests that guar is only effective when mixed into the food.
