Abstract

On September 11th, 2001 a group of hijackers took control of four commercial jetliners in the United States with the intent of crashing them into strategic U.S. targets thereby furthering the aims of a war against America that had been declared by Osama Bin Laden, leader of the stateless terrorist organization al-Qaeda, several years earlier. By 10:03 a.m., all four of the jetliners had been crashed by their hijackers: one each into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center in New York City; a third into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia; and the last in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, short of its final destination because of the efforts of the passengers and crew to retake the plane. In all 2,977 people were killed in the attacks of September 11th.
