Abstract

“IAP” action of pertussis toxin Pertussis toxin is endowed with such multiple biological activities that it has been referred to as LPF (lymphocytosis-promoting factor), HSF (histamine-sensitizing factor), HA (hemagglutinin), MPA (mouse protective antigen) and IAP (islet-activating protein). The last name, IAP, was introduced by Ui and his colleagues (1) who were the first to report that a single injection of pertussis vaccine into rats resulted in extremely marked hyperinsulinemia in vivo when these rats were challenged with glucose or other insulin secretagogues within several days of vaccination. Also, much more insulin was released in vitro“ from pancreatic islets excised from the vaccine-treated rats than from those of nontreated rats (2). This unique “IAP” action of pertussis vaccine was later reproduced strictly by the protein purified from the culture medium of Bordetella pertussis (3, 4); the protein proved to be pertussis toxin because it displayed all the biological activities of the toxin as well as LPF, HSF, MPA as well as IAP.
