Abstract

Purpose: Women with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) most commonly present with disease that extends out laterally from the cervix to the parametrium/sidewall. Traditionally, external beam parametrial/sidewall boosts have been added to the standard pelvic treatment in addition to tandem-based brachytherapy. A hybrid approach, by adding an interstitial component to the intracavitary applicators, has the potential to target both central tumor and asymmetric lateral extension of disease. There is a variety of hybrid applicators currently available on the market, but they are expensive and confine the user to specific equipment and technology.
