Abstract

The lifetime of the plastic crossed helical gear depends on the meshing teeth temperature, since the physical property of plastic changes with temperature. The meshing teeth temperature of the plastic crossed helical gear decreases when the mating gear material is changed from plastic to metal. However, the degree of effect to extension of the lifetime of gears was smaller than other conditions. The reason is considered that the influence of the surface properties of the metal gear used repeatedly. In this study, we performed endurance experiments with two kinds of metal gears which varied in the surface property of the teeth surface. As the results, we confirmed that the surface property of the mating metal gear affected the lifetime of the plastic crossed helical gear. Furthermore, we confirmed that the lifetime of the plastic crossed helical gear combined with metal gear having appropriate surface properties can be evaluated by stress ratio, and their relational expression have possibilities that it is the same as the plastic crossed helical gear of the other condition.
