Abstract

Wide-scale disasters often cause massive blackouts. The 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku is a recent example of this problem. Hence, we devised a modular wind turbine using foldable blades, like corrugated wings, for use as an emergency power source. Using the folding wing, we expect that the storage location of the windmill becomes compact. In this study, we designed three kinds of prototype foldable blades. These wings have a polygonal line shape. The flow around each blade was checked using a smoke wind tunnel with a high-speed digital camera. The experimental results found that some prototype blades indicate good performance.
