Abstract

A novel crystal of Nd3+:LaMgB5O10 with dimensions of 43 × 25 × 10 mm3 was grown successfully from a Li2O–B2O3–LiF mixed flux by top-seeded solution growth method for the first time. Its thermal properties, including the thermal expansion, special heat capacity, thermal diffusivity coefficient and thermal conductivity were measured. The polarized absorption and fluorescence spectra of this crystal at room temperature were investigated in detail. The quasi-CW laser operation at 1.08 μm of this crystal was performed. A maximum average power of 0.3 W with a slope efficiency of 9.5% was achieved. The results reveal that Nd3+:LaMgB5O10 crystal is a potential candidate for laser crystal.
