Abstract

THE EFFECT OFTHYROxiNE OR THYROID SUBSTANCE in stimulating increased milk andbutterfat production in lactating dairy cattle has been amplydemon-strated (1–4). The reports of Winchester (5) and Taylorand Burmester (6) in-dicate that thyroid active substances are alsoessential for egg production. Though present results arecontradictory (7), there is a definite possibility that the growthprocesses of domestic animals may be stimulated by administration ofsuitable amounts of thyroid hormone. Since the excessive costof thyroxine and desiccated thyroid makes their use in animalproduction impracticable, the attention of the authors has beendirected to a search for less expensive sources of thyroid activesubstances. As early as 1914 Morse (8), confirmed by Rogoffand Marine (9) reported that iodized proteins produced slightphysiological effects, qualitatively comparable to that produced bythyroid iodine.
