Abstract

Abstract The growth rates and rate-determining steps for filamentary crystals of varioys substances are surveyed. Such simple crystalline shapes yield reliable growth rate data and clear morphological information. Numerous reported data are classified in the following categories: (1) Growth rates which can be represented by the Hertz-Knudsen (HK) equation and a constant sticking coefficient. (2) Growth rates corresponding to the HK equation at a low temperature but becoming lower at high temperatures. (3) Growth rates approaching the rates given by the HK equation with increasing temperature. (4) Growth rates having a peak value at a specified temperature. For each category, growth models and rate-determining steps are discussed.
