Abstract

Schizosaccharomyces sp. HL utilized almost all of the volatile fatty acids (VFA) up to concentrations of 9.3 g/l in the surface culture using supernatant from anaerobically fermented pig waste as medium. The maximum yield of dry matter (DM) was 5.8 g/l in the optimum conditions of 9.3 g/l VFA, pH 5.1 and 29°C. Lowering of pH was required to obtain the maximum yield of yeast DM, and the optimum pH value rose as the VFA concentration increased.
