Abstract

TiO 2 boule single crystals, 15 mm in diameter and 40 mm in length, have been grown successfully using the edge-defined, film-fed growth (EFG) method. When the Ir die top temperature is a little high, the boule crystal shape is difficult to control and we find that spiral growth occurs regardless of crystal rotation in the EFG process. By observing the boule crystals with a polarizing microscope, stress is observed to correspond to the slot pattern on the die top. The stress is suppressed by crystal rotation during growth. The growth characteristics and their relation to the growth conditions are reported.
