Abstract

AbstractThe reproduction of SV40‐adeno 7 hybrid virus (SP 2) was studied in a human diploid cell strain (LEP). Both components of the hybrid virus, i.e. the true adeno 7 and the defective PARA carrying incomplete SV40 genome, gew well in this system. Their final titres were comparable to those observed in green monkey kidney (GMK) cells. Investigation of the interaction between adeno 7 and PARA in LEP cells, including the examination of plaque‐derived virus lines, revealed that in this system the adeno 7 virus grew without the helper effect of PARA; moreover, the presence of PARA did not significantly influence the growth characteristics of adeno 7 in LEP cells. PARA, although present in some preparations of SP 2 virus in quantities exceeding adeno 7, were found to be defective in LEP cells as well as in GMK cells. Their presence and titre in different SP 2 virus lines derived from LEP cells were dependent on the multiplicity of infection.
