Abstract

Lemna perpusilla (duckweed) plants were grown in D2O with ordinary and fully deuteriated glucose. The abnormalities induced at 50%-63% D2O were found to be eliminated to a considerable extent by the addition of kinetin to the nutrient medium. It is postulated that kinetin smooths kinetic distortions at high D2O levels, but above 63% D2O there is a further blockage so that growth ceases even in the presence of kinetin. Fully deuteriated glucose was not deleterious and made it possible to raise the fixed deuterium level in the plants to 59%.
