Abstract

A technique is described by which highly perfect single crystals of CaF2, SrF2, BaF2, CdF2, LaF2, CeF2, PrF2, TbF2, MgF2, and ZnF2 have been prepared in a hydrogen fluoride atmosphere. Rare-earth-doped CaF2, and SrF2, LaF2, cobalt-doped ZnF2 and MgF2, and nickel-doped MgF2 have been successfully used as optical masers. These crystals were free of light scattering and revealed no strain pattern when viewed through crossed polarizers.
