Abstract

Abstract The growth of α-Fe-Co precipitate particles on [011] symmetric tilt boundaries with misorientation angles of θ = 5-50.5[ddot] in Cu-Fe-Co bicrystals has been examined. The development of precipitate-free zones (PFZs) during ageing has also been investigated. The ageing time t dependences of the PFZ width d and the average particle radius r― can be described by dm = K 1 t and r-n = K 2 t (where K 1 and K 2 are constants) respectively. The power n changes systematically from three to five as the misorientation increases from 10 to 50.5[ddot], while m = 2 for all the bicrystals investigated. The change in the n values can be explained by considering the relative contribution of bulk diffusion and dislocation pipe diffusion towards the particle growth.
