Abstract
Single crystals of garnets (Gd 3Ga 5O 12 and Y 3Al 5O 12) have been grown by the Czochralski technique. Crystals 10 mm by 4 cm long can be easily grown from iridium crucibles. Laser action has been observed in Gd 2.88Nd 0.12Ga 5O 12 at 1.0632 μ. These lasers exhibit very low threshold and low beam divergence.
