Abstract

Thick, faceted 2H-NbSe 2 crystals with mosaic structures ⪯ 0.2° have been grown by breaking with tradition and using small diameter ampoules for iodine vapor transport (IVT). We describe a protocol which has resulted in 97% of ampoules having two or fewer nucleation sites and has produced faceted single crystals to 2.0 mm in thickness and weighing up to 158 mg. These thick crystals are a prerequisite for neutron scattering studies of the flux line lattice in this model anisotropic superconductor with very weak flux pinning.
