Abstract
Abstract Seedlings of the tea crabapple (Malus hupehensis Rehd.) were started in the greenhouse for 3, 7, 9, 11, or 14 weeks and then were grown for 18 days in controlled-environment chambers. Enriching the atmosphere to 3000 ppm CO2 significantly increased height, number of nodes, and number and length of lateral shoots over those maintained at ambient CO2. The effect of CO2 enrichment on height was greater than that on node number. Although growth during 18 days of treatment was greatest on the oldest seedlings, growth on the youngest seedlings was greatest in proportion to their original size.
