Abstract

Cr2N single crystals were successfully grown under 1 MPa nitrogen pressure by the floating zone method using an optical image furnace. The single crystals were inclusion-free and sizable. Typically, crystals were 3–4 mm in diameter and 50–60 mm in length. At nitrogen pressures lower than 1 MPa, the Cr phase segregated as an inclusion with a stripe structure in the crystals. The Vickers hardness of the Cr2N single crystals was nearly isotropic at approximately 1400 HV5.
