Abstract

Growth rates of four species of Southeast Asian Gracilaria collected from Manila Bay, the Philippines (G. verrucosa, G. salicornia), and from Ko Yo (G. fisheri) and Trat (G. firma), Thailand, were measured in both an outdoor cultivated tank with flowing seawater and in an indoor, closed-recirculating system (Aquatron). Thalli of all species grew in the outdoor tank when water temperature was between 22°C and 28°C. Maximum daily growth rates for G. verrucosa (24.35%), G. salicornia (12.71%), G.fisheri (14.26%) and G. firma (10.76%) occurred in July. Gracilaria verrucosa showed the highest daily growth rates among the species (P > 0.05). Highest growth rates for all species occurred between 25°C and 26°C
