Abstract

Abstract Blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus), channel catfish (I. punctatus), white catfish (I. catus), and four of their hybrids were evaluated for winter growth in two experiments. The genetic groups of channel catfish were the geographic races from Auburn, Kansas, Marion, and Rio Grande, and intraspecific hybrids, Marion x Kansas and Auburn x Rio Grande. Interspecific (females listed first) hybrids were channel x blue, blue x channel, channel x white, and white x blue. All populations were subdivided into selected lots and random lots. Selected groups consisted of the largest 10% of the population at 18 months. The catfish were fed 0.5 to 2.0% of their body weight, 3 to 6 days a week, depending on water temperature. Growth of white catfish was faster (P = 0.05) than that of all other groups. Among channel catfish, those from more northerly geographic locations performed best.
