Abstract

The concentration of human growth hormone in plasma was measured in six children with kwashiorkor during and after an oral glucose load; the measurement was repeated after 4 weeks of therapy. Despite a substantially greater rise in bloodglucose in the untreated children, growth-hormone concentrations did not drop as early or as completely as after treatment. The stimulus to the secretion of growth hormone associated with protein depletion apparently overrode the effects of the raised blood-sugar.
