Abstract

Plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings was fabricated on a SiCp/Al composite in an aluminate electrolyte, and the growth behaviour of the coating was studied. The results show that PEO process can be divided into four stages: anodic oxidation stage, micro arc discharge stage, uniform spark discharge stage, arc discharge stage. The PEO coating is preferentially generated in the Al matrix and SiC-aluminum interface, then on the SiC particles. The coating grows inward and outward simultaneously. The corrosion resistance of coating is closely associated with microstructural evolution. The coating generated at 0.6 min-5 min is a single-layer structure while the coating is a double-layer structure for 10 min and 30 min. The corrosion resistance of inner barrier layer is better than that of the outer loose layer.
