Abstract

ABSTRACT Field experiments were carried out at the National Horticultural Research Institute, Ibadan, Nigeria during the early rainy season of 1995 to identify the optimal balanced fertilizer rate for production of Celosia argentea cv. TLV8, a leafy vegetable. Optimal rate was 90 kg/ha of 15-15-15 for fresh shoot weight, plant height, branching number and stem girth, which corresponded to 10.8 ton/ha, 37.3 cm/plant, 1.8 per plant and 0.68 cm/plant, respectively. Optimum rates for leaf number and leaf area were 30 kg/ha and 60 kg/ha, respectively. The cost of the optimum level of fertilizer input was N2,700.00K and the corresponding gross output was N64,800.00K. One US$ = N20.00K.
