Abstract

THE first brood of chicks to be raised by the Ohio Station at Wooster with no removal of the floor litter during the first 12 weeks was started February 2, 1946. The procedure was repeated with another brood June 5, 1946. The surprise then was that the chicks did as well or better than previously when the floor litter had been removed at frequent intervals. Consequently, a second brood was started September 4, 1946 and raised on the same built-up litter. The viability of the second brood was 90 percent while that of the first was 85 percent. Thus began the Station’s continuous use of the same built-up litter for one brood of chicks after another. To date (June, 1950) 14 consecutive broods of chicks have been started and successfully raised during the first 10 to 16 weeks on the same built-up litter.BUILT-UP LITTER A SANITARY PROCEDUREIn the .
