Abstract

A clear and transparent Sc 2 O 3 -doped (1.0 mol%) congruent LiNbO 3 single crystal was grown by the float zone method. The Sc 3+ distribution coefficient was estimated to be close to one. The induced birefringence of the Sc 2 O 3 -doped LiNbO 3 was at least two times smaller than an optical grade LiNbO 3 measured as a function of Ar + (λ = 488 nm) irradiation time. The 10 nm blue shift in the absorption edge, reported in MgO-doped LiNbO 3 , was also observed in the Sc 2 O 3 -doped LiNbO 3 , but the large shift in the infrared OH - absorption band of the 5 mol% MgO-doped LiNbO 3 was not observed in the Sc 2 O 3 -doped LiNbO 3 ,indicating that Sc 3+ incorporation may proceed by a different mechanism. This is the first reported results, to the authors' knowledge, of a trivalent dopant increasing the damage resistance level in LiNbO 3 .
