Abstract

Crystal growth of pure and Nd-doped KY(WO 4) 2 (KYW) single crystals by modified CZ and top seeded solution growth (TSSG) methods were carried out. Different flux systems like potassium tungstate (K 2WO 4) and potassium ditungstate (K 2W 2O 7) with suitable concentrations have been added to the charge. Growth has been optimized with single as well as mixed flux systems. The dopant concentrations were varied in the charge as 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 3 and 5 weight percentage with KYW. Individual doping (Nd,Yb) as well as (Nd+Yb) co-doping of the crystals were carried out to understand the spectral properties and stability of the materials for lasing performance. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirms the stable alpha-phase of these grown crystals. The functional groups present and structural stability on doping were confirmed with Raman analysis. The chemical and mechanical properties of the grown crystals are analyzed with differential thermal analysis (DTA) and micro-hardness results.
