Abstract

Historically, graduating physicians in the consultative fields are taught the 3 As—affability, availability, and ability. Although these 3 attributes are cornerstones of building and maintaining a practice, growing your medical practice in the 21st century is more complex. Like many subspecialties, gastroenterology is becoming increasingly specialized. Fellows are exposed to opportunities for highly specific training and some may want to create a specialized focus area of practice. Unfortunately, most gastroenterology fellowships do not teach their trainees how to cultivate and sustain a clinical practice or develop a niche.
