Abstract

Restructuring the method of prenatal care or certain office or hospital systems may help reinforce the goal of self-management and empowerment for pregnant women. For example, group prenatal visits are one way to structure care to specifically address these issues. Although group medical visits in general have been touted as a busy provider’s answer to saving time and maximizing the volume of patients seen,47 the woman-centered goal of group prenatal visits is far more effective. Ideally, group visits set up an interpersonal dynamic with a collaborative approach that empowers all the participants and de-emphasizes the traditional power hierarchy of clinician and woman. Such empowerment is particularly important in activating women and their families around behavioral and lifestyle changes such as nutrition and smoking cessation that require individual motivation and action for self-care. The leveling of hierarchy in group visits can also empower staff toward more collaborative team approaches.
